#17 Common Loon
The Common Loon – a “veritable avian submarine” as the American Bird Conservancy puts it – are incredible swimmers and divers, and their eerie, mournful wails are the soundtrack of wilderness summer nights in northern forests. They’re also unforgettable sights on woodland lakes in the breeding season, with a red eye, white necklace and black-and-white checkerboard back.
